Gibbs named in Cobra’s squad

Herschelle Gibbs has been named in the Cobras’ 20-man provisional squad for the inaugural IPL Twenty20 Champions League in India in October. Gibbs was a member of the Deccan Chargers side that won the IPL championship in South Africa last April. Herschelle Gibbs has been named in the Cobras’ 20-man provisional squad for the inaugural IPL Twenty20 Champions League in India in October.

Gibbs was a member of the Deccan Chargers side that won the IPL championship in South Africa last April. He was also a member of the Cobras side that won the domestic Pro20 competition last season and therefore qualified with two sides to play in the Champions League in India.

However, in terms of the criteria governing the Champions League, the IPL franchise could make use the player’s services but would have to play the player’s home franchise (from the player’s country) a compensation fee of US $200,000.

Apparently the Deccan Chargers decided against paying this steep fee and hence the SA Pro20 champions have snapped him up.

The squad will be reduced to 15 players by September 7, at which time the 12 Champions League teams have to submit the teams to the IPL.

Cobras squad:

Greame Smith (captain), Derek Brand, Ryan Canning, Henry Davids, Jean-Paul Duminy, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Herschelle Gibbs, Claude Henderson, Rory Kleinveldt, Charl Langeveldt, Richard Levi, Carl Nieuwoudt, Justin Ontong, Vernon Philander, Francois Plaatjies, Andrew Puttick, Gurshwin Rabie, Leonard van Wyk, Stiaan van Zyl and Monde Zondeki
